The SSA has two programs that they pay Social Security Disability Benefits on; * The SSDI is paid to qualifying people and qualifying family members as long as the qualifying person paid into Social Security taxes and worked long enough. Your adult child also may qualify for government benefits on your earnings record if he or she has a disability that started before age 22. * For adults and children that have limited resources and income can also get paid through the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) government disability program. Those people that are 65 or older and are not disabled, that have certain limits financially, can get paid through the SSI program. Under both programs, medical requirements for disability and SSI are determined under the same process, for the majority of people. The SSA has a set of rules they use to determine disability, which applies to both programs, they do this through a series of questions about work history, education and your medical condition.
